Egypt: Fresh Clashes As US Clarifies Comments

(Sky News) Police in Egypt have fired tear gas at supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, as the US insists it is not siding with the country's military.

According to one security official, clashes erupted when protesters tried to storm Media Production City, a compound based in a Cairo suburb that is home to many satellite TV channels.

Demonstrators threw gas canisters fired from armoured vehicles back towards police lines.

Ambulances were called to the scene, although there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The protests came as the US Secretary of State sought to clarify comments he made to a Pakistani TV station.

John Kerry told Geo TV that the Egyptian military did not oust Mr Morsi and was instead "restoring democracy" in the country.

Speaking before a meeting in London, Mr Kerry said: "Egypt needs to get back to a new normal. It needs to restore stability, to be able to attract business and put people to work.

"We will work very, very hard ... in order to bring parties together to find a peaceful resolution that grows the democracy and respects the rights of everybody."

Meanwhile, Egypt's interim vice president Mohamed ElBaradei called for talks with Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and his other supporters.

"What we need to do right now, of course, is to make sure that we stop the violence," he said in an interview with the Washington Post.

"Once we do that, we immediately have to go into a dialogue to ensure the Brotherhood understands that Mr Morsi failed. But that doesn't mean the Brotherhood should be excluded in any way.
