VIDEO: Mysterious giant crater discovered at 'world's end' in Siberia

(Euronews) The discovery of a giant unexplained crater in Siberia has pricked the curiosity of scientists. The 100-metre-wide hole has been located in Yamal, one of Russia's remotest regions.

A team of researchers are set to visit the site to take soil samples in a bid to explain what caused the mysterious crater. The find was initially revealed after being filmed from a passing helicopter. Yamal, one of Russia's northernmost points is sparsely populated, with temperatures known to plummet as low as -50 degrees Celsius. The area is known in the local Nenets language as 'the end of the earth'.

According to reports from TV Zvezda, the person who shot the video noted that the hole appeared to be caused from below, with darker soil around the surface indicating the effect of high temperatures.

The region is known for its wealth of natural gas, leading to speculation that the crater may have been caused by an underground explosion. The hole was discovered near the Bovanentsky gas field.
