The Food Standards Agency is expected to reveal today that the painkiller was picked up at some UK slaughterhouses that kill nearly 9,500 horses each year.
There are fears the contaminated meat may have entered the British food chain after first being exported overseas.
Figures reveal one UK slaughterhouse tested positive for bute — horse painkiller phenylbutazone — on several occasions in 2012.
Findus is also due to reveal whether its beef lasagne, containing up to 100 per cent horse, had traces of the drug, which can cause severe blood disorders in humans.
Meanwhile, a report by MPs today claims the FSA needs new powers to prevent another horse meat scandal.
It could force firms to carry out tests — with all results immediately going to the watchdog.
Environment Secretary Owen Paterson warned at an emergency summit in Brussels that more British slaughterhouses and processing plants could be raided.
He later announced three months of EU-wide DNA testing to trace horse meat — and checks for bute.
